What are software product evaluation surveys?

Software product evaluation surveys are one of the best ways to ask your customer survey questions regarding their experience.

By asking relevant questions, you can get insights into how happy or unhappy customers are with your product. This information can help you identify any pain points and improve the overall user experience. For instance, if you’d like to see how we helped real estate agents choose the right software, read our case study on software survey questions here.

In the next section, let’s look at some considerations when running a software evaluation survey.

Before you run the survey project, consider the type of questions you want to ask

Before you can decide on the questions that you want to ask it is necessary for you to have a look at the method of software survey questions. Below are two types of methods to ask software survey questions:

  • Open-ended software product questions: This type of survey question usually has no specific answer. It is a free-form question that allows customers or users to express their feelings and thoughts about any topic related to your product or service. The main idea behind using an open-ended question is to get detailed feedback from your respondents about certain product features and functionalities without being biased towards one particular answer choice.
  • Multiple choice software product questions: These types of questions allow respondents to choose only one possible answer out of several given choices. This is done to provide feedback regarding a specific feature of your product or service. You can use multiple choice questions when you want users to understand how they feel about individual aspects or features present in your software by asking them if they like them or not.

Types of Software Product Evaluation Survey questions

Let’s look at the different types of product evaluation questions to ask if you’re a software company.

1. Which of the following do you use our software for? (multiple choice question)

This question is meant to determine what products the customer is using, what services they have (or would like) and how they use those services. It’s important because it gives you an idea of their current situation. This can help you determine where to focus your software improvements in the future.

You should ask this question at the beginning of your survey because it helps set a framework for your other questions. It also allows you to glean more information about customers’ habits later in the survey.

It also works well as part of an online survey tool because it has a broad enough scope that it won’t be seen as too invasive or specific by potential customers — meaning that anyone who takes interest in your software will be able to answer it easily. Even if they don't know everything about software products yet, they would still contribute.

This type of question category will be useful for a product-market fit analysis. Generally, a product-market fit helps a company understand how the target market for a product. For more information, check out this article by Hubspot on how to find the product-market fit for your industry.

2. How often do you use our software? (scale)

In your software product evaluation survey, you can even ask scale-based questions. These questions help you get an understanding of how popular your software product is:

  • Use a 1 to 10 scale for all questions. This is important for consistency and simplicity, as well as the ability to compare your results with other surveys. (If you use a different scale, like 1-3 or A-F, then you can't compare your results with those of other surveys.)
  • Make sure that the scale is easy to understand. After all, you want people who complete your survey to be able to answer each question without any confusion! If there's any doubt about how they should answer a question (for example: "Did we make it easy enough?"), then ask more specific follow-up questions: "Was this product easy enough?" or "Would you say this product was too difficult?"

3. What are your primary reasons for using our software product? (multiple choice question)

In your software product evaluation survey, you can ask the following types of questions:

  • The product is easy to use.
  • It's reliable.
  • I like the training materials.
  • The product offers a broad range of functionality.
  • My team is familiar with it and we can work together easily because of that, or something similar to this answer (you should be able to find this on your own).

These types of survey questions will give you an idea of why customers are using your software product. For example, we recently partnered with an educational institution in the US on a software survey project. Our client wanted to track student engagement and learning outcomes by using a software product. Learn more about the software project on our website.

4. Is there anything we are doing that would keep you from using the software in the future? (free response field)

Asking for feedback is a simple way to get your users to tell you what they like and don't like about your products. This will help you understand how much value users are getting out of their experiences, as well as identify areas where improvements could be made.

Many times, we're so close to the product that it's hard to see what's wrong with it - after all, we created these things ourselves! Use this opportunity as an opportunity for self-reflection: ask yourself what makes sense and what doesn't. What could be improved upon? How would others perceive this experience if they were in our shoes? Once you've asked those questions (and received answers), use them as inspiration for making changes in future iterations of the software application or website.

Additionally, you can even look for feedback or reviews of your product on TrustPilot or Quora

Where to find software product evaluation surveys?

Now that you have an idea of which kinds of software surveys to ask, let’s look at where can you find them. Data collection panels are a popular option for software surveys. You might be wondering what data collection panels are. Essentially, these panels serve as an all-in-one data solution for companies that run research projects. For instance, if you are a software company wanting insights on your product, you can partner with a panel. This panel will help you streamline all your data needs in one place.
